This month: science fiction.
The Genre Book Club meets every other month to discuss a novel from the science fiction, fantasy, or horror genres. In February, the Club will discuss Mary Doria Russell’s sci-fi novel The Sparrow.
In 2019, humanity finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post picks up singing from a planet which will come to be known as Rakhat. While UN diplomats endlessly debate a first-contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question the meaning of being “human.”
The discussion will be complemented by light snacks and refreshments. Attendees are expected to have read the book in advance.
Copies of The Sparrow can be purchased in paperback at The Writer’s Block Book Shop. Registration for the Club is not required.
