A BOOK CLUB EXPLORING WORLD LITERATURE
From Peru to China, Nigeria to Hungary, some of the world’s greatest writers are at work. In this bi-monthly book club, we will explore these literary talents from around the world, discussing their books and the places they come from.
In June, we will be discussing The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vásquez. A national bestseller, a winner of the 2014 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and an instant global sensation upon its publication in the United States, this book confronts the cost of the drug wars through a narrator, Antonio, who witnesses the assassination of his friend. In an attempt to learn the life story of his friend as well as the motive for the assassination, Antonio must wade through Colombia’s violent history all the way to the 1960’s, before narcotics had corrupted his country.
An hour-long discussion will be followed by an informal reception. Copies of The Sound of Things Falling can be purchased in paperback at The Writer’s Block. Registration for the book club is not required.
