A book discussion paired with whiskey
In April, Bourbon Book Club attendees will discuss The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by twentieth-century Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima. Because of the boyhood trauma of seeing his mother make love to another man in the presence of his dying father, Mizoguchi becomes a hopeless stutterer. Taunted by his schoolmates, he feels utterly alone until he becomes an acolyte at a famous temple in Kyoto. Obsessed by the beauty of the temple, he cannot escape its image—even when tempted into the geisha district by a friend. In the novel's soaring climax, he tries desperately to free himself from his fixation.
The Book Club discussion will be complemented by a bourbon selected and provided by The Whiskey Attic. Attendees are expected to have read the book in advance.
Copies of The Temple of the Golden Pavilion can be purchased in paperback at The Writer’s Block Book Shop. No registration for the Club is required.
