A BOOK CLUB DEDICATED TO WORLD LITERATURE
From Peru to China, Nigeria to Hungary, some of the world’s greatest writers are at work overseas. In this bi-monthly book club, readers will explore literary talents from around the world, discussing their books and the places they come from.
In September, World Book Club attendees will discuss Last Words from Montmartre, a novel by the acclaimed Taiwanese author Qiu Miaojin. Unfolding through a series of letters written by an unnamed narrator, it tells the story of a passionate relationship between two young women—their sexual awakening, their gradual breakup, and the devastating aftermath of their broken love. In a style that veers between extremes, Qiu’s genre-bending novel is at once a psychological thriller, a sublime romance, and the author’s own suicide note.
An hour-long discussion will be accompanied by light snacks and refreshments. Attendees are expected to have read the book in advance. Copies of Last Words from Montmartre can be purchased in paperback at The Writer’s Block Book Shop. Registration is not required.
