The original Writer’s Block Book Club, featuring both classic and contemporary fiction on an alternating basis.
Join us for the January Book Club meeting, where we’ll be discussing Henry James’s classic New York novel, Washington Square. Catherine Sloper is the plain-featured daughter of a wealthy doctor. She is emotionally inexperienced, and unprepared for the complexities of courtship when a handsome (and potentially gold-digging) man begins to pay her visits. Torn between her desire for romantic love and the approval of her father, Catherine is forced into self-knowledge and an uncertain destiny. One of James’s most-loved novels, Washington Square has been praised by readers for its elegant prose and ambiguous moral texture, and features one of his great comic characters—Catherine’s busybody aunt, Lavinia Penniman.
An hour-long discussion will be followed by an informal reception. Attendees are expected to have read the book in advance. Copies of Washington Square can be purchased in paperback at The Writer’s Block Book Shop. Registration for the Book Club is not required.
