A book club dedicated to world literature
From Peru to China, Nigeria to Hungary, some of the world’s greatest writers are at work oversees. In this bi-monthly book club, we will explore these literary talents from around the world, discussing their books and the places they come from.
In August, we will be discussing The Vegetarian by South Korean novelist Han Kang. Caught in the monotony of an unchanging domestic life, the novel’s protagonist Yeong Hye is troubled by dreams of violence and brutality. She reacts by becoming vegetarian. However, this seemingly innocuous decision has disastrous consequences as her family and friends try to reassert control over her life. Dark, transgressive, and surreal, this book has captivated readers worldwide and won its author an International Man Booker Prize.
An hour-long discussion will be followed by an informal reception. Attendees are expected to have read the book in advance.
Copies of The Vegetarian can be purchased in hardcover at The Writer’s Block. Registration for the World Book Club is not required.
