WORKSHOPSWorkshops are available to students ages 5–18 and cover a variety of topics and disciplines, including: poetry and prose, printmaking, drama, filmmaking, blogging, podcasting, and more. All workshops are project-based: they result in a product (a book, recording, film, print, etc.) that each student takes home with them when the workshop ends. Workshops are taught by Writer’s Block staff or qualified volunteers, and are limited in size to allow for a more individualized and memorable experience. When filled beyond capacity, workshop enrollment is determined by lottery one week before the workshop begins. Workshops are offered free of charge.
FIELD TRIPSField trips are available to classes from the Clark County School District, and and are currently limited to grades K–5. Designed as a two-hour workshop, these field trips occur during the school day and are intended for groups of between 12 and 30 students. As a group, students will collaborate on the writing of a picture book. During the final hour, each student will individually complete and illustrate their own copy—which they will take home with them at the conclusion of the trip. There is no charge for field trips.
IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING On a select basis, The Writer's Block offers comprehensive publishing workshops to high school classes. Each academic year, our staff and volunteers will collaborate with a high school teacher to introduce creative writing, editing, art direction, and publishing to high school students. All production and print costs are met by The Writer's Block.
VOLUNTEERThe Writer’s Block offers its programming at no charge to the Vegas-area community, and is always looking for volunteers to assist in teaching and designing workshops, field trips, and in-school activities. Volunteers must be 18 or older. All volunteers receive a discount at the Book Shop.
